The Staples gymnastics team scored 126.05 points on Thursday to defeat Westhill (84.9) and New Canaan (82.3). Stapls scored a 32.85 o vault, 32.3 on floor exercise, 32 on the balance beam and 28.9 on the uneven bars. Freshman Anna Violette led the Lady Wreckers with a 32.65. Violette scored an 8.15 on vault, 7.9 on bars, 8.3 on beam and an 8.3 on floor. Classmate Lindsay Kiedasch (8 on vault, 7.5, on bars, 8.3 on beam, 7.8 on floor 31.6 total) was second for Staples. Also competing all-around for the Lady Wreckers were junior co-captain Emily Fishman (8.4-7-8-8.2-31.6), senior co-captain Zoe Heller (8.3-6.5-7.3-8-30.1) and junior Morgan Cravenho (6.9-4.4-7.4-6.2-24.9). Junior Katie Blumenfeld competed on floor (6.4), beam (5.5) and bars (4.6) for Staples.
"The girls did extremely well," Lady Wreckers Coach Kelsey Martin said. "Because of lack of practice time, I used this meet as a practice meet and we added new skills to each of the girls routines. On vault Anna and Zoe attempted another half twist, making the vault a half-full. On bars the team all casted higher and tried to stay tighter. This is our weakest event still and we need more practice. On beam, Morgan added two backward rolls in a row. Emily had a handstand, then a forward roll connected and received a high score on beam (and all-around). Anna and Lindsay changed around their routines and added harder jumps to their switch leap and added extra bonus points to their dismount. even though Ana feel and Lindsay missed a few connections they scored one of the highest on beam this season. Katie added two wolf jumps connected giving her added bonus. On floor, Anna added a new front ariel to her second pass. Our floor has always been our strength were a looking to clean routines up. Overall, the meet was great considering lack of practice time. Zoe has been a great leader to the girls. She will be missed next season. I hope to add a few skills and clean up connections for FCIACs and States.
