GFA sports roundup preview

The Greens Farms Academy baseball team, led by head coach Todd Mathewson and assistants Earl Mathewson and Johnny Cusato, will be a strong contender for both the FAA and New England Championships this year.
GFA will be led offensively by senior tri-captains Henry Van Zant (Westport), Spencer Traver and Rex Tavello. The Bowdoin-bound Van Zant will lead a strong pitching staff with returning juniors Thatcher Gleason and Yang Wan along with junior transfers Christian Papic and Brien Comey (Westport).
The Dragons are lethal at the plate with sophomore Brian Dexheimer (Westport) and junior Dan Hoffman leading the way.
The GFA softball team is looking forward to a strong season led by senior captains Idalia Friedson and Alexa Sullivan. This season, Friedson will move from center field to the pitcher's mound and Sullivan will anchor the infield at first base.
The large sophomore class will provide power with strong defensive play by Miranda Princi, Brooke Cirillo, Jacqui Young, Sarah Young, and Sydney Huffman and the solid bats of Jazmin Reyes and Avery Swett.
GFA opens its season at The Wooster School next Wednesday.
The GFA girls tennis team sets its sights on the FAA title this season.
The talent on this year's team is filled by players with significant varsity or tournament experience. Team leadership will come from senior captains Maggie Harwood and Lexy Damianos (Westport). Dominant performances in singles and doubles are expected from Harwood, juniors Hayley Sanzone and Taylor Schendel, sophomores Olivia Kjorlien, Caitlin Rummelsburg and Kyja Kutnick and freshman Frankie Garofalo.
Rounding out the lineup with experience and skill are returning varsity players Damianos, seniors Caroline Sullivan and Alison Hutchison (Westport), juniors Regi Monroe and Isabelle Canaan, and sophomore Jessica Liu (Westport). New to the varsity team this year are Kutnick, Suzy McGrath and Emily Cahill..
Match play kicks off on April 13 at the Hopkins School.
The GFA boys tennis team will be looking to make a strong showing in the tough Fairchester League and make a trip back to the New England Tournament.
GFA will have a solid group of returning players including seniors Mikey Hinsta, Nate Gleason and Freddie Mezidor. The Dragons also have depth with five returning juniors, Brian Hirschfeld, Kishan Patel (Westport), Sam Ratcliffe, Jackson Soule and Ben Shack Sackler (Weston). GFA will also have two talented young players joining the squad, freshman Kyle Wolfe and eighth grader Jack Meyer (Fairfield).
GFA starts its season against King on Monday.
The GFA boys lacrosse team has high expectations for the 2011 campaign
Senior goalie and captain Kyle Webb returns and will share time with junior Will Swett. In front of Webb will be seniors captain Evan Bieder, Nick Corroon, and Zach Sherin (Weston). Junior Harry Garland (Westport) and sophomore Munir Qaddourah will share the long stick midfield duties as well as playing close defense. Sophomore Seth Krantzler and freshman Sam Hodge will also be counted on to make an impact this year.
The midfield will be led by seniors Chris Morency and Wes Huber along with juniors Will Pavlis, Chris Tarika and Nick Wood with sophomores Justin Arzi (Weston) and Anders Forfang, J.T. Becker (Westport) and freshman Max Tarika will be relied upon too.
Senior captains Jake Becker (Westport) and Will Conroy (Westport) lead the attack. Becker broke the single season point record last season. Rounding off the final spots will be Ryan and Conor Eckert.
The GFA girls lacrosse team starts this season with many returning players and a positive outlook.
Led by experienced seniors Nikki Bergschneider, Hayley Brown, Elizabeth diBonaventura and Grace Backe the Dragons look to continue to improve their overall record and return to the FAA tournament. The returning juniors will add key offensive and defensive strengths, Sam Brown, midfielders Kenzie Lau-Kee (Westport) and Kate Tomlinson and Morgan Bingham will hold off competitors in the cage.
The GFA sailing team will try to replasce many senior sailors from last year's team.
GFA was second overall in the Fairfield County League and 15th out of 70 high schools in the New England Scholastic Sailing Association last year. The Dragons also won the Connecticut State Championships, held up at the Coast Guard Academy.
Returning to the team this year are juniors Emily Petno, Sarah MacDonell (Westport) and Bridgette Foster and sophomore Liz McDermott. New to the team this year is junior Jack Kauffman, a transfer from Darien. Also new are freshmen Charlotte Frank, Jack Hall-Tipping, Andrew McCarthy, Allie Nixon, Isabelle Swearingen and Olivia Taylor.
