The Staples girls hockey team got off to a good start on Monday at Fairfield. Staples jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 4:21 mark with Lady Wrecker junior Jenna Chusid converted a centering pass from classmate Brittanie Hamlin and beat Fairfield goalie Stephanie Gabriel to give Staples a 1-0 lead.

"I found the puck in front of me and just finished it off," Chusid said. "I play left wing, so I'm usually the one who passes it to the center, and it was cool to finally finish it off."

It was Chusid's first goal of the season and the junior was ecstatic that she finally got the opportunity to score.

After that goal it was all Fairfield and the hosts came away with a 7-1 victory at Wonderland of Ice for its third win of the season. The Lady Wreckers remain winless.

Jamie Mercado added a goal and an assist and Fattibene and LaSota added assists as well. Just 1:25 after Chusid's goal, LaSota scored on a rebound to tie the game at one. Mercado broke the tie at the 8:40 mark when shorthanded she beat Staples junior goalie Gwen Moyer to make the game 2-1. Moyer made 34 saves in the game for the Lady Wreckers.

Greenwald scored her first goal of the game at 1:25 of the second with a wrap around and just under five minutes later LaSota added her second of the game. Fairfield tallied four goals in the second, including Fattibene's power-play goal at the 12:49 mark that made the game 6-1.

Despite the loss, Staples maintains a positive attitude.

"I feel like we have a lot of team spirit and we've been working hard," Chusid said. "A lot of the team is just beginning, but we're having a good time doing it, I feel like we've improved a lot."

The Lady Wreckers played a home game yesterday against Lauralton Hall in a game that was completed too late for press time. Staples will play at Darien next Wednesday at 8:10 p.m.
