Is there any food more photogenic than ice cream?
Instagrammers are constantly looking for the next great food pic, and ice cream spots are the perfect hunting ground.
In southwestern Connecticut, there's a trifecta of popular ice cream spots on Instagram; MilkCraft, Cream & Sugar Cafe and Ferris Acres Creamery all have over 1,000 public posts checked in on Instagram.
With its trendy use of liquid nitrogen, it's no surprise that MilkCraft in Fairfield is a social media star.
Milkcraft uses the machine power of a line of industrial strength stand mixers to thrash the cream. The cold comes from liquid nitrogen drawn from a tap next to the mixer and poured into the mixing bowl with an impressive display of mist, creating a magician's showbiz aura. Bubble cones are made on a line of waffle irons right in the store. The fresh made, crispy waffles are every bit as delicious as the ice cream. The final product is rich and creamy, firmer than soft-serve but not quite as hard as scooped.
Cream & Sugar is on the over-the-top, eat-til-you-barf bandwagon with its monster milkshakes. Shakes include Crazy for Coconut, Peanut Butter Crush Brownie Milkshake and S'mores.
And, of course, Ferris Acres is a seasonal favorite that proves good old fashioned farm fresh ice cream stands the test of time–and the test of trends.
Known for singling out the best of the best in various categories for its millennial readers, Thrillist tackled ice cream in a recent list. The site's food experts picked the best ice cream spot in each state, and Ferris Acres in Newtown won top honor for Connecticut.
Thrillist cites the creamery's history as well as its true-to-Connecticut roots as reasons for the pick.
"Though the creamery operation only started running in 2003, the Ferris family can trace its lineage in Newtown back to 1703, and has occupied this farmstead since 1894...And for any Connecticut residents clamoring about the omission of Oxford's Rich Farm, there's nothing wrong with the ice cream, but their recent franchise opening in SoCal means you're now sharing them with the West Coast, which just isn't the same."
