The Fairfield University Art Museum will offer a special family day, “Italian Treasures — The Baroque: Gold and Gilded,” of Saturday Feb. 3, designed for children 4 to 10 years of age.
The event is but one of numerous special offerings for adults, scholars, students and children during the next few months to celebrate the university’s 75th anniversary. As part of the celebration, the museum’s Bellarmine Hall Galleries are hosting “The Holy Name, Art of the Gesù: Bernini and his Age,” now through May 19, described by the museum as a “major international loan exhibition (that) will bring together for the first time an important group of dazzling and historically important works of art to tell the twin stories of the rise of the Society of Jesus in Rome and the building and embellishment of the Gesù, its glorious mother church, in the very center of the city.
“Masterpieces on view include art from the Gesù itself (never before lent to America), the most spectacular being the great Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s marble bust of Jesuit theologian and cardinal Roberto Bellarmino, (patron saint of Fairfield University) and more than 40 paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints from numerous museums and private collections in America.
“This exhibition will give visitors to the museum an unparalleled window onto the extraordinary works of art found within the walls of the Gesù, the immensely talented artists who created them, and the powerful and strong-willed personalities whose vision, ambitions—and financial means—made it all possible,” the museum said in its news release.
Numerous free events — tours, lectures and concerts — are planned in conjunction with the exhibition, with a full schedule available on line.
During family day, activities will include arts & crafts programs and a “child friendly gallery tour.” Two 90-minute sessions will be offered: 1 to 2:30 and 2:30 to 4 p.m. Online registration is required for each child.
