Fairfield resident Valeria Martinez, assistant professor of finance at Fairfield University, is the first recipient of the Dolan School of Business's annual Excellence in Teaching Award. The award is determined by nominations made by students who consider a professor's effectiveness in the classroom, interaction and embodiment of Jesuit ideals. Before becoming an educator, Martinez, born and raised in Mexico City, worked for Merrill Lynch, the National Banking and Securities Commission in Mexico City and the finance department of the City of San Antonio. In 2007, after receiving a doctoral degree at the University of Texas in San Antonio,she came to Fairfield University, where her research focuses on international investments and market microstructure.

The Connecticut chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has named Stamford resident Carrie Levitt as a 2010 MS Corporate Achiever -- one of only eight business leaders to be recognized in Fairfield County. Levitt, a development manager at the local chapter of the National MS Society, joined the group in 2008. She has a bachelor's degree from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. MS Corporate Achievers honorees are nominated by their peers and selected by an advisory council for outstanding contributions to business, civic, and cultural enrichment. In 2006, Levitt founded Benefit Hope, a nonprofit organization for young professionals in the Fairfield County area in support of the National MS Society. When Levitt became employed with the local chapter she brought Benefit Hope in as a committee, which she oversees in addition to Bike MS and MS Taste of Hope events.

The DiMatteo Insurance Service Center in Shelton, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, promoted Sue Doolan of Orange to commercial lines support, and Donna Monks of Trumbull to commercial lines account manager, and hired Alice McCarthy of Seymour as health benefits account manager. Doolan provides customer service and administrative support for DiMatteo's commercial lines accounts. With the agency since 2005, Doolan has worked for Aetna Life and Casualty in Trumbull and Metropolitan Property and Liability Insurance Co. in Rocky Hill. She is a licensed insurance adjuster, and has a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts. Monks is a liaison for customers and carriers in DiMatteo's commercial lines business. She joined DiMatteo Insurance in 2003 as a personal lines senior account manager. In 2007, she was recognized with the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research's Outstanding Customer Service Representative of the Year award. Monks has a bachelor's degree from Montclair State University. As health benefits account manager, McCarthy fields health benefits service calls. Before joining DiMatteo, she worked for 15 years at MHN-Healthnet Inc. in Shelton. McCarthy attended the Stone Business School in New Haven, and is pursuing a bachelor's degree from the University of Phoenix.
