Two teams of Westport high school students have qualified for a regional robotics competition in Pennsylvania in April after strong performances earlier this month at a competition in Westchester County.

The two teams -- i2robotics and Wrecker Robotics -- have advanced to the FIRST Tech Challenge East Super Regional Competition, to be held April 3-5 in York, Pa. That contest is one of four FTC regional tournaments nationally, and top performers there will advance to the World Championships in St. Louis.

The Westport teams were among five that qualified for the regional based on performances at the Hudson Valley FTC Challenge on Feb. 16 at Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y., the coaches said in a news release.

In a 34-team field, i2robotics and Wreck Robotics finished first and second, respectively, in qualifying rounds, the coaches said. In alliance competition -- in which three teams combine to face other three-team groups -- the two Westport teams joined one from Setauket, Long Island, to win the alliance championship.

i2robotics won the event's top team honor, the Inspire Award, given to the team that best achieves all the elements of a FIRST competition.

Wrecker Robotics won the event's Connect Award, given to a team which is connected to the community, both the local population and local engineers.

As a warmup for regional competition, both teams will compete in the Connecticut State Championships on March 8 at Greens Farms Academy.

Wrecker Robotics includes students from Staples High School, while i2robotics includes Staples and Weston High School students.
