The Westport Weston Family Y has hired Scott Smith as its new communications director.

Smith will be responsible for the Y's communications efforts to its members and the communities it serves. He has served as director of communications and editor for the United States Golf Association and as a staff writer and editor for an array of magazines, including BusinessWeek, Bon Appetit and Golf Digest.

A resident of Westport since 1998, Smith is active in local community affairs, most recently serving as chairman of the town-appointed Longshore 50th Anniversary Committee.

Smith will also play a role in creating and carrying out the communications plan for the Family Y's "Building What Matters" campaign for a new facility on its 32-acre Camp Mahackeno property.
