Dick’s sets March 15 opening in Norwalk
Dick’s Sporting Goods set March 15 as the “preview” opening for its new Connecticut Avenue store in Norwalk, with giveaways planned throughout its grand opening weekend starting Friday and an appearance slated Saturday by a member of the New York Giants.
In June, Dick’s acquired the bankrupt Sports Authority and after several months of deliberations, elected to refurbish the store at 444 Connecticut Ave. in Norwalk, one of 22 Sports Authority locations Dick’s chose to keep under its own logo. With existing Dick’s stores at Danbury Fair mall and Connecticut Post Mall in Milford, the company chose not to retain Sports Authority stores in Danbury and Bridgeport.
Separately last summer, Dick’s bought out bankrupt Golfsmith, keeping the retailer’s only Connecticut location in Norwalk just up the road. On its website, Dick’s is now referencing the Golfsmith in Norwalk and other locations as Golf Galaxy, its existing brand, with signs at that location indicating it is called Golf Galaxy.
Dick’s did not respond immediately Monday to a Hearst Connecticut Media request for information about the Norwalk stores.
“It’s not like we are buying an ongoing business and trying to then integrate it into Dick’s,” said Dick’s CEO Edward Stack in a November conference call. “Basically the (Sports Authority) deal for us — as the Golfsmith deal — is really a real-estate play for us.”
The new Dick’s opens its doors at 444 Connecticut Ave. at 9 a.m. on March 15, with hours extending until 9:30 p.m. On Friday, March 17, Dick’s is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. for its grand opening, with New York Giants running back Paul Perkins scheduled to appear Saturday from noon to 2 p.m., with a limited amount of access on a first-come-first-serve basis. On Sunday, the store is scheduling a “skills challenge” from noon to 2 p.m. for kids ages 6-15.
Dick’s is giving away free T-shirts Friday to the first 100 people in line, and gift cards in “mystery” denominations for the first 100 adults at the Saturday opening at 8 a.m. and Sunday at 9 a.m. The company has posted a coupon on its website at www.dickssportinggoods.com offering $10 off every purchase of $25 or more March 17-19, with some restrictions. And all weekend long, the Norwalk store will be offering chances to open a “gift locker” for prizes ranging from youth baseball gloves to a Puma prize back valued at up to $375.
