The term "luxurious coastal living" usually brings to mind Florida's southwest coast or the coral sands and aquamarine waters of Bermuda, but the color of sand and water and warmer climes do not define a particular level of luxury.

Westport has its own gold coast. In fact, it has its own Bermuda, and along the coast of the town's Bermuda Lagoon are a number of properties that provide luxurious coastal living of their own. Among them is a shingle-style, custom-built colonial house at 12 Surf Road that includes 5,406 square feet of living space on three levels.

The floor plan is complementary to the property on which the house sits. It was built with the site in mind, allowing for the appreciation of the water views from almost every angle. Its not only architecturally beautiful, but every level of the house has a balcony from which to enjoy the natural surroundings.

As the name of the street implies, this house has direct waterfront and it also has its own deep water dock, which can accommodate a 40-foot sail boat. The current owners also swim right from their back yard.

Despite its size, the house was designed for comfort. Local architect Tim Geitz created a space for living and for entertaining, and that design was realized in the construction by Paul Tallman Builders of Fairfield, in such a way that magnificent water views and sunsets can be enjoyed from every room.

Built in 2001, the white, wood shingle house sits on a half-acre lot. The house comprises several New England-like features including its exterior, its wrap-around mahogany verandas and four fireplaces -- one in the living room, in the family room, in the master bedroom and in the summer, or secondary, kitchen. The fireplaces in the family room and summer kitchen are made of river stone.

Inspired by its location, the house also has many nautical features, the most prominent being an architectural element at its center, which gives the appearance of the house being built around a lighthouse. The lighthouse theme is repeated in the stained glass panels of the mahogany front door.

The nautical motif continues inside. There are some round windows. One bath contains tile work in a sea horse pattern, and the main kitchen has a tile backsplash interspersed with tiles depicting bisected Nautilus sea shells.

The eat-in section of the kitchen has a built-in wooden bench area, which replicates that of a ship. The main kitchen also features top-of-the-line appliances, a walk-in pantry, center island, and a tray ceiling with lighting inside the tray.

Lighted tray ceilings are also found in the family room, master bedroom and on the third floor. Because of the architectural style of the house there are many nooks and crannies and interesting angles. Every angle is met seamlessly with decorative molding.

The summer kitchen on the lower level, is perfect for entertaining, although there is no range. It opens to an octagonal-shaped stone deck in the back yard, and also provides access to a screened-in porch. The current owners have outfitted the summer kitchen as an ice cream parlor for their children. This second kitchen has a heated stone floor.

The third floor living space is flexible and can serve as an exercise room, playroom or office. The dramatic light fixture on the third floor resembles a Gilhooly, and for good reason. It was crafted by someone who trained under the master glassblower.

The town sewer line has been extended to all of Surf Road. This house is not yet connected, but easily could be.
