"It's a great feeling and I'm very proud to be the captain of the team, but it was a team effort," said Lady Trojans senior tri-captain Ashley Fumai.
Sophomore Samantha Seath led Weston's attack with her aggressive attack, firing 10 shots in scoring five goals while garnering an assist. Seath has developed into a go-to player this year and playing in tournaments for the Connecticut Lightning in the offseason helped her pick up her game.
"We had really good passes and it was easy to move the ball up the field and move through their defense," said Seath. "Playing in the season helped me."
Complementing Seath on offense was classmate Brittany Swanson (six shots, three goals, one assist) and Fumai (two goals, one assist). Sophomore Samantha Druks and freshman Hannah Hutchins had one goal each for the Lady Trojans.
Winning the ground ball and shots battle helped Weston, as it outshot Notre Dame, 25-11.
"We controlled the ground balls and set a goal of not allowing too many shots," said Lady
Weston senior tri-captain goalie Emily Allen made five saves.
"It was nice to see the team keep the ball on the other side of the field and I was happy not to have the shots on me," said Allen.
Druks led the way in the trenches with nine ground balls. Swanson (seven ground balls), Hutchins (five ground balls, one interception) and freshman Cara Fleming (seven ground balls) also helped in the trenches.
Senior tri-captain Jordan Masarek, classmate Kristen Papen (two ground balls, one caused turnover, one interception), juniors Emily Lewis (seven ground balls) and Kagan Magnoli and freshmen Alex Fumai (eight ground balls) Rebecca O'Brien (three ground balls, two draw controls) defensively for the Lady Trojans, which helped the transition game.
"We just really passed well to one another and not slacking off helped us win," said Allen.
Ashley Fumai said, "The majority of the team communicated more and we capitalized on each other's strengths. We were able to work together."
The Lady Trojans aren't content on just setting the standard for most wins in the program's history and they are confident that the best is yet to come.
"I think the record will be shattered because things are looking up," said Ashley Fumai.
Mehner said, "I hope we can finish the season with more wins. In the next couple of years, we'll be up there. It's on the rise and we'll be a top competitor."
