The Westport Weston Family Y's Water Rat youth swim team will hold tryouts for new swimmers on Tuesday, Sept. 3 in the Y's pool.
Tryouts are for swimmers ages 12 and under, and they will compete for open places on the team's roster, the Y said. Members of the 2012-2013 team do not have to try out.
Last year's tryouts drew more than 150 swimmers who were competing for about 30 openings on the team.
The tryout fee is $25 for those who pre-register; $40 for those who register the day of the tryouts. Registration forms are available at www.westporty.org.
Check-in for pre-registered swimmers will be at 4 p.m. for ages 9 to 12; 5 p.m. for ages 8 and under.
Drop-in registration will be at 5 p.m. in the pool lobby, and tryouts will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Swimmers who are 13 and older should arrange a personal evaluation by calling head coach Ellen Johnston at 203-226-8981 or emailing her at email@example.com.
With a roster of more than 200 swimmers ages 7 to 18, the Water Rats are one of the largest teams in New England, the Y said. The year-round program includes practices and competition against area teams, plus regional and national meets sanctioned by USA swimming, the national governing body for competitive swimming.
The season in the short course, 25-yard pool, runs from September to April. The long-course, 50-meter pool, season is from April to August. Swimmers 8 and under use the 25-yard pool in both seasons.
During tryouts, the Y said, coaches will time some swims and ask children to perform tasks to see how they execute instructions.
Some children not selected for the team may have an opportunity to join at a later time, the Y said. Coaches may recommend others join one of the Y's pre-competitive groups or suggest further swim lessons.
