Westport Weston Family Y exhibition gymnastics team has been invited to represent the United States at an international competition in Africa next summer after it captured a gold medal in a U.S. Gymnastics Federation competition that concluded Sunday in Orlando.

The 18-member team won the medal for its performance on the theme "Around the World" during the Gymnastics For All National Championship Challenge at Walt Disney World, the Y said in a news release.

The Y took the top honor in competition against 21 other exhibition teams from across the country.

The girls, ages 10 to 15, spent six months perfecting the five-minutes routine choreographed by coaches Sally Silverstein and Lindsay Navarro, the Y said. All 18 are members of the Y's Showtime Exhibition Gymnastic Team, which previously has competed internationally.

Judges in Orlando invited the team to represent the U.S. as its only exhibition team at the Gym for Life World Gymnastic Challenge International Competition next summer in Cape Town, South Africa, the Y said.

With the victory, the team also has qualified to participate in the 2015 World Gymnaestrada Helsinki, Finland, the largest gymnastic event in the world, Silverstein said in the release.

In addition to its competitive performance in Orlando, the team also did exhibitions at Disney's Hollywood Studios and at Downtown Disney's Waterside Stage.
