For the second straight year, the Staples High boys water polo team left the Hopkins Invitational in New Haven as a champion.
The Wreckers defeated the Eaglebrook School of Deerfield, Mass., Canterbury and the host Hopkins in the final last Saturday to defend their title.
In a 14-9 win over Hopkins, senior Angus Armstrong scored six goals--matching his total from the previous two games--to spur the Wreckers' offense.
Senior Ryan Moran earned the win in net.
In the 12-3 defeat of Canterbury, Armstrong netted five goals, while sophomore Max Wimer scored twice. Junior Jeff Burns also scored a goal.
With a commanding lead in hand, junior Tyler Crowder added a late tally.
In the 10-2 win over Eaglebrook, Staples got three quick goals from Wimer and one from Armstrong. DeLuca also scored three times before the half.
Eaglebrook scored twice, but the Wreckers' Tommy Reinhardt responded with a goal.
Staples, led by head coach Charlie Gulotta and assistant Brandon Barone, played against New England prep schools, as well as other YMCA teams this season. The Wreckers also compete with Greenwich, the only other public school in Connecticut with an official water polo program.
