In a matchup between two of the FCIAC's three remaining unbeatens in boys tennis, Staples High came out on top.
The Wreckers improved to 8-0 -- one of two unbeatens with Greenwich (6-0) -- and Ridgefield fell to 7-1.
"I thought he played the big points really well," Staples coach Kris Hrisovulos said of Moskovitz. "He really stepped up and was assertive -- not too passive. He really moved the kid around, which was one of the kid's weaknesses."
Staples won three of the five singles matches, but Hrisovulos said the pivotal match was at No. 1 doubles, where Connor Mitnick and Jack Reardon defeated Ridgefield's Doug Butturini and Matt Deprima 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
"That was the match that I thought was kind of the difference-maker," Hrisovulos said.
Mitnick has mainly played at No. 5 singles for Staples, but Hrisovulos moved the junior to the top doubles spot to counter Ridgefield's position of strength.
The Tigers slotted their usual No. 3 and No. 4 singles players -- Pat Sheehan-Delany and Tommy Knortz -- at No. 2 doubles on Tuesday. That duo defeated Staples' Baxter Stein and Jason Eisenberg 6-3, 7-5.
Coming into the day, Stein had been paired mainly at No. 1 doubles with Reardon.
"I tweaked my lineup a little bit because I knew that Ridgefield had good doubles," Hrisovulos said.
At No. 1 singles, Staples' Jake Hirschberg -- playing in just his third match this year because of injury -- fell to Arnaud Valentin 6-1, 6-3. Hrisovulos said that Hirschberg "competed really well," and mentioned that the competitive attitude spread throughout the lineup.
"It was kind of a trickle-down effect," the coach said.
At No. 5 singles, Ridgefield's Tal Nizan edged Jason Chaskin 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
Hrisovulos credited the Wreckers' mindset in the match, noting that they didn't get "caught in the hype of both teams being undefeated."
The coach added: "I'm very impressed with the maturity and resiliency of this team. We know that we're going to get our toughest competitor's best."
