The Staples High wrestling team had its final tune-up on Tuesday in preparation for the FCIAC championships, which begin with the trials on Friday.

Shorthanded again due to injuries, the Wreckers fell to Westhill 59-15 at home.

In a meet filled with 10 forfeits, sophomore Daniel Kogstad provided one of the few highlights on the mat for Staples. Wrestling at 220 pounds, Kogstad earned a 4-2 decision against Mike Vigliotti.

"He wrestled well," Staples coach David Bernstein said. "He wrestled a smart match, tired the kid out and got the win. He did a good job."

Freshman Matt Prior and senior Jeremy Sherman were credited with forfeit wins in the 126- and 132-pound weight classes, respectively.

At 132 pounds, Westhill's Jeff Glover pinned Justin Ludel in just 33 seconds.

"Ludel should've had a really close match, but he got caught in a front headlock cradle," Bernstein said.

Westhill also wrestled to a win at 152 pounds as Nick Jimenez -- No. 2 in the state in his weight class -- earned a 16-0 technical fall against senior Alex Kogstad.

"He did not wrestle offensively at all," Bernstein said of Kogstad.

At 170 pounds, Westhill's Monir Koumall pinned Matt Collins in just 32 seconds. The Vikings also earned forfeit wins in the 106, 113, 138, 145, 160, 182, 195 and heavyweight classes.

Although Staples has struggled to win dual meets this year because of injuries, Bernstein is optimistic about having individual success in the FCIACs, which will be held at New Canaan High School. He said that he expects his team to have at least one place-winner, led by Sherman, who is now 31-2 on the year at 126 pounds.

"I'd be pretty unhappy if we didn't have any place-winners," he said.

Staples placed 13th in the FCIAC last season.

"These tournaments are crazy. They can go either way," Bernstein said. "It's a matter of a kid having a good day or a bad day."
