WESTPORT -- The Staples High girls ice hockey team is looking to build off the program's best finish in its brief history.

A co-op team with Trumbull High last season, the Wreckers won six games--the most since making the jump from a club team to varsity three years earlier.

This season, Staples will join forces with Stamford and Westhill High--a one-win program a season ago--and will again try to find some semblance of success. With hopes of reaching the postseason for the first time, the Wreckers will lean on a core group of players that includes senior defenseman Jessie Lepisto, senior forward Jess Blasnik, junior goalie Casey Bang and sophomore forward Cassie Miolene. In total, the team has eight players from Staples, four of whom are returning from last season.

"We are expecting them to lead the way," Staples coach Amy Cobb said, "but with the joining of the other school, we have a nice pool of players."

Miolene made second-team all-FCIAC last year while playing for Stamford-Westhill, while Lepisto (Staples) and Blasnik (Stamford) were all-conference honorable mention.

Cobb said that forechecking is one of the team's strengths.

"The girls are very good at going hard and putting pressure on the other team," she said.

After a turnaround season a year ago, Staples has one goal in mind.

"The goal this year is to make the playoffs for the first-time ever," Cobb said.

The Wreckers will play Greenwich at Dorothy Hamill Ice Rink in Greenwich on Thursday.
