The Staples High softball team used a strong start on Monday to run its win streak to three.

Sparked by first baseman Shannon Connors' run-scoring hit in the first inning, the Wreckers topped New Fairfield 5-3 at Greens Farms Elementary School.

After center fielder Christine McCarthy walked and second baseman Emily Lustvader reached on an error with one out, Connors connected on a two-run single to put the Wreckers up 2-1.

"That's been part of the key to our success -- the top of the lineup getting on, and we're moving them around," coach Sara Holland said. "I like that we came out really aggressive in that first inning. That's kind of a signature to this team."

Connors, who went 1-for-4 in the win, had three hits in each of Staples' first two games. She has a team-leading two home runs and 11 RBI this season.

"I'm feeling pretty comfortable at the plate," Connors said. "I just try and get out and hit as much as I can so I can keep up that comfort level."

Staples improved to 3-0 on the year, while New Fairfield dropped to 2-1.

Holding onto a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning, Staples tacked on a pair of insurance runs. Emma Moskovitz drew a walk to begin the sixth, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on left fielder Bridget Johnson's single. Shortstop Nikki Bukovsky made it 5-2 with an RBI groundout later in the inning.

"It was great," Holland said of the two-run sixth inning. "Another key part of this offense is we pretty much don't quit. For us, it's not a matter of if we're going to do it. It's just a matter of when we're going to do it."

Junior pitcher Katie Burke allowed a run in the seventh, but she closed the game out with the tying run at the plate. Burke scatted 11 hits over seven innings.

Staples added a run in the second inning on a fielder's choice by Lustvader. Morgan DiDonato and third baseman Gabby Perry led off the inning with hits.

New Fairfield trimmed Staples' lead to 3-2 with left fielder Lauren Mangini's single in the fourth inning. Third baseman Hannah Ford and catcher Melanie Sulich opened the inning with singles, before Mangini delivered with two outs.

Sophomore pitcher Jordan O'Connor received the loss despite allowing just four hits over six innings. The right-hander walked three, hit a batter and saw New Fairfield commit three errors.

O'Connor hit a two-out triple in the seventh and scored on Ford's single.
