Staples girls tennis edges Warde, advances to Class L quarterfinals

The Staples girls tennis team advanced to the Class L quarterfinals with a 4-3 win over Fairfield Warde on Monday afternoon at home in the first round. The Wreckers will battle another FCIAC foe, Ridgefield, in Tuesday's quarterfinals.
No. 3 Staples (16-2) defeated Warde 4-3 in the FCIAC quarterfinals behind wins at all four singles spots, while Warde swept the doubles matches. Monday's rematch was a different story as the Mustangs' No. 2 Jenny Schneider defeated Alex Collins 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Staples No. 2 doubles team of Avery Wallace and Tess Rubin took down Mary Ball and Ashley Aufiero in a close match (6-3, 5-7, 7-5).

The Wreckers recorded three singles victories as Melissa Beretta (6-0, 6-0), Julia Bartimer (6-2, 6-1) and Gabi Titlebaum (6-2, 6-3) all recorded straight set victories.
Warde's No. 1 doubles team of Erin and Megan Hines defeated Kelsey Shockey and Vanessa Mauricio 6-0, 6-2. Staples No. 3 doubles team Sarah Rountree and Rachel Liberman fell to Liz Gallucci and Darci Byington 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
A win Tuesday against the Tigers, who upset Glastonbury 4-3, will mean another battle with an FCIAC team, as Darien and Greenwich meet in an FCIAC semifinal rematch.
