The Staples High girls golf team opened its season Tuesday by topping a pair of its FCIAC counterparts.
The Wreckers scored a 174, while Darien carded a 193 and Fairfield Ludlowe a 215 at Longshore.
Senior Erica Stein led Staples with a 1-over par 38, which tied Jackie O'Connor's girls school record from 2006. Stein shot two birdies on the afternoon.
"So exciting and such a rewarding score," coach Bob Byiteck said. "She's capable and she's living up to her expectations."
Darien's Izzy Lee tied the girls course record with a 36.
For Staples (2-0), Faith Garcia recorded one birdie and ended up with a 42.
Byiteck has high expectations for Garcia -- a transfer from Trinity Catholic and two-time champion of the Borck Junior Tournament -- and said the "best is yet to come" for the junior.
"The 42 was a fine score," Byiteck said. "But when we get to some of the more difficult schools, I know Faith will shoot in the 30s. I also believe that she'll end up with the course record there.
"I can see her shooting a 35 or 36 this season."
Sophomore Mary Bennewitz shot a 45 for Staples, while junior Christie Cantor and freshman Anelise Brown each carded a 49.
"She was very consistent on all our scores," Byiteck said of Bennewitz. "She didn't have any bad holes."
Darien's Julianna Lee shot a 45. Jen Elsaesser led Ludlowe with a 48.
Byiteck expects his team to continue to progress this season.
"Before the match I said we'd shoot 172," the coach said. "That was our goal. ... So far no other girls' program in the FCIAC has shot below 180."
Staples' next match will be against Trumbull on April 23 at Longshore.
