NEW CANAAN -- Offense was in short supply for the Staples High girls basketball team on Thursday.

The Wreckers connected on just 11 of their 55 attempts from the floor and fell 52-36 to New Canaan in the opener of the LaVista Tournament.

The Wreckers trailed by only three points through three quarters, but they failed to generate consistent offense in the fourth. New Canaan, which used a steady dose of center Kelly Armstrong on offense, outscored the Wreckers 19-6 in the final quarter.

"Inexplicable poor shooting," Staples head coach Ed Huydic said.

Armstrong had a game-high 23 points, including 15 in the second half as the Rams moved to 4-2 on the season.

The Rams will play Greenwich in the LaVista final on Monday at 1 p.m. at Darien High School.

Staples (3-3), which failed to crack 40 points for the second straight game, had only three players score in the loss. Guards Erica Stein and Nicole Bukovsky each scored 16 points, while forward Madeline Schemel added four.

"This was a winnable game right from the tip," Huydic said. "You can't shoot 11 of 55 and win very many games."

The Wreckers, who will play at Darien in the consolation game on Monday at 11 a.m., had assists on just five field goals. Huydic wasn't sure how, or why, his team struggled so much to make shots.

"I can't attribute it to anything. ... I can't explain it," he said. "They weren't forced shots. New Canaan came out in a zone and our top two players, Stein and Bukovsky, had their way, taking open look after open look."

New Canaan piled up a 34-23 edge in rebounding. Courtney Rogers led all players with nine rebounds, while Armstrong had seven. Forward Maggie Fair led Staples with seven rebounds.

"All in all, a disappointing loss. Two in a row now," Huydic said.
