STAMFORD -- The Staples softball team forfeited its game at Westhill Thursday afternoon after injuries unexpectedly left the Wreckers without enough players to field a team.

Staples (10-10, 8-10 FCIAC) apparently had 10 players for Thursday's game, but two went to the school athletic trainer prior to boarding the bus. Based on their injuries the trainer told them they could not play, leaving Staples undermanned.

Staples called Westhill an hour before the game and told them of the situation, at which time it was determined Westhill would win by forfeit. The Vikings also canceled their senior day festivities.

There was no word on why JV players were not substituted onto the varsity roster.

Staples coach Charlie Judge was at Westhill having arrived before his team and found out they were not coming once at the field.

Staples had played the day before and reporters at that game did not report any injuries.

The win was significant for Westhill (15-5, 14-4) as it secures a home game in the FCIAC quarterfinals on Saturday.

Staples is slated to begin play in the state tournament the following week.
