The Staples High girls swim team placed eighth at the Class LL state championships on Wednesday at Wesleyan University in Middletown.
The Wreckers recorded 292 points, behind seventh-place finisher Trumbull (320.5 points), and in front of Newtown, which came in ninth (244). Greenwich won the team title with 816 points, while Cheshire (555) finished second and Amity placed third (517). Hall (415.5) and Glastonbury (363) rounded out the top five.
"We had some good swims," Staples head coach Mike Laux said. "The girls dropped their times and did well."
Staples junior Verity Abel won the 200-yard freestyle and set a Class LL record in the process, clocking in at 1:51.88. Abel also won the 500 freestyle in 4:59.18, defeating Anna Lu of Amity (5:08.00).
"That's a race that Verity isn't totally comfortable with, but goes at it as hard as she can and the results show it," Laux said. "As for our team, we came in eighth place today, which is what we were seeded, so I'm pleased with our overall performance."
Laux said that Bullock, who placed second in the 100 breaststroke at FCIACs, is continuing to show progress this year.
"She's hitting her stride here," Laux said.
The Wreckers also placed fourth in the 400 freestyle relay as freshman Aileen Coyne, Bullock, senior Sarah Cooperman and Abel clocked in at 3:41.75. The Cardinals won the event and set a Class LL record time of 3:30.16.
Staples will compete in the State Open on Saturday at Yale University in New Haven. Abel is seeded first in the 500 free and second in the 200 free behind Jessica Hespeler of Ledyard. Bullock is seeded seventh in the 100 breaststroke and 21st in the 200 individual medley. The Wreckers are seeded ninth in the 400 free relay.
