An undefeated regular season put the Staples boys ski team in prime position to claim an elusive State Open championship on Monday afternoon at Mt. Southington.

However it wasn't meant to be for the Wreckers, who had to settle for third as Greenwich took top spot for a second straight season. Greenwich's top skiers combined for a time of 313.32, Fairfield Prep finished second in 315.48 and Staples placed third in 319.28. Twelve teams participated in the event.

Greenwich duo Paul Williams (50.53) and Joe Demuyt (50.77) took 1-2 in the entire event, while Wreckers junior Campbell Ashman (50.80) finished third. Ben Friedman (52.20) placed 11th for Staples.
