TRUMBULL -- Jack Greenwald scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in overtime, lifting Staples past Trumbull 49-42 on Friday night at McDougall Stadium. The win lifts Staples, which kept its Class LL playoff hopes alive, into a four-way tie for third place in the conference.
"That's one heck of a win, we're still alive here," Wreckers coach Marce Petroccio said.
After the Wreckers (6-2, 6-1) scored on their possession in overtime, Trumbull faced a fourth-and-goal from the 7-yard line. Quarterback Nick Roberts completed his pass, but the receiver was tackled short of the end zone and Staples held on for a wild win.
"I'm not going to lie, I got down on my knees and I prayed that we could stop them," Petroccio said. "Thankfully my prayers were answered. We waited four quarters and the last play of overtime to play defense and the kids made a great play."
Massie connected with Will Johnson on a 29-yard touchdown on third-and-10 with 25 seconds left on the clock trailing 42-35. The game-tying drive started on the Wreckers' own 28-yard line with 1:24 left in the quarter.
"We knew we had the team to win, even though there isn't much time left our offense was confident we could score," Massie said. "Great receivers like Will Johnson made a spectacular catch; we are very happy right now."
Trumbull had taken the lead on a 5-yard touchdown run by Marc Cesare. In a back-and-forth affair, neither team led by more than one score. The Eagles nearly sealed the win midway through the third quarter, but Massie converted a fourth-and-17 with a 26-yard pass to Teddy Coogan.
The win spoiled an outstanding performance by Cesare. The senior ran for 244 yards on 38 carries and all six Eagles touchdowns. The Wreckers stepped up their defensive efforts, allowing Cesare 64 yards on 20 carries in the final two quarters and overtime.
"We made an adjustment at halftime and the kids did a great job," Petroccio said. "(Cesare's) a great running back; he can run, (quarterback Nick Roberts) can throw, it's not easy defending these people and the kids got a stop when they needed it."
Running backs Patrick Lesch and Jack Greenwald each had two touchdowns for the Wreckers. Massie threw a pair of touchdowns to Johnson and ran for a score. "Jack Massie, Jack Greenwald and Patrick Lesch; they were phenomenal," Petroccio said.
