Staples' Monahan wins gold at junior rowing nationals

Staples High School senior Jeff Monahan, along with, Fairfield Ludlowe's Cameron Yates, finished in first place in the Men's Double Scrulls race at the US Youth Rowing Nationals, which took place June 13-15 in Sacramento.

Monahan and Yates -- who finished with a time of 7:13.52 in their final race in their high school careers -- represented Saugatuck Rowing Club. The duo finished just ahead of Rye (N.Y.), which clocked in at 7:14.63. Eleven total boats from Saugatuck Rowing Club qualified for nationals.

Monahan will continue his rowing career at Columbia University in the fall, while Yates will attend Cornell.
