Boys tennis: The Staples High boys tennis team finished second in the state behind Greenwich in Class LL.

Greenwich, which advanced its doubles team and three singles players into the quarterfinals, recorded 24 points to defend its title. Staples, which had two singles players and one doubles team in the quartefinals, finished with 21 points.

Top-seeded Jason Seidman of Amity defeated Glastonbury's Reid Risinger, the No. 2 seed, 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday at Yale University in New Haven to win the singles title. Ridgefield's Thomas Knortz and Bryson Mosley, the No. 6 seed, defeated top-seeded Miles Singer and Danny Soifer of Westhill, 6-3, 6-3 to win the doubles title.

For Staples, 12th-seeded Luke Foreman advanced to the semifinals in singles play before losing to Seidman 2-6, 1-6.

The Wreckers' Zach Levin, the No. 9 seed, also advanced to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Risinger 3-6, 1-6. At doubles play, the Wreckers' Connor Mitnick and Jack Reardon, the No. 3 seed, fell in the quarterfinals to Knortz and Mosley 3-6, 2-6.

Foreman and Jake Hirschberg are entrants in State Open singles play for Staples. The Open begins Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Yale.

Girls tennis: Staples junior Melissa Beretta advanced to the third round of Open singles play on Saturday with an 8-3 win over Riya Abraham of Newington, the No. 13 seed. Beretta, unseeded, beat Jonathan Law's Lianne Maynard in the first round, 8-2.

At doubles play, the Wreckers' Alex Collins and Avery Wallace fell in the second round to No. 6 Sarah Alptekin and Catherine Hatfield of Darien, 2-8.

The Wreckers' Rachel Lieberman and Callie Bartimer lost in the first round to Jessica Levine and Alyssa Lyon of Joel Barlow, the No. 8 seed, 4-8.
