NEW HAVEN — Zakeer Ahmad won the boys 1,600 meters and placed third in the 3,200 meters to lead the Staples High School boys indoor track team to a fourth-place finish at the Class LL state championships Wednesday night at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Ahmad won the 1,600 in 4:23.50, followed closely by teammate William Landowne in second in 4:23.81. Ahmad then placed third in the 3,200 in 9:34.81.

The Wreckers took second in the 4x800, with the team of Luke Lorenz, Sebastian Wick, Benjamin Seiple and Brian MacCordy finishing in 8:18.25, a fraction of a second behind Glastonbury.

McMahon’s Ajax Diamandis placed second in the 1,000 in 2:36.26.

On the girls side, Norwalk High’s Penda M’Bengue was the fastest qualifier in the girls 55 meters in 7.54 seconds; she went on to tie for first in the final with Char’Nae Epps of West Haven, both finishing in 7.48. M’Bengue also placed second in the 55 hurdles (8.56).
