The Stamford-Westhill-Staples girls co-op ice hockey team continued its strong start to the season, despite suffering a 3-2 setback to the Tigers on Wednesday night at the Winter Garden Ice Arena.

Staples players Meg Fay and Kyra Dal Ballo scored goals for Stamford, which dropped to 2-1 on the season. Dal Ballo's power play goal 7:41 into the third period pulled her team to within 3-2, but the Tigers held on for their first victory of the season.

Maddie Burns netted two goals for the Tigers (1-1)

Stamford started the season with a 7-5 win over Trumbull last Wednesday, and then backed it up with a 5-4 win over Fairfield co-op last Saturday.

The close defeat to the Tigers, who made the FCIAC final last year, is yet another sign of progress for Stamford, which was outscored 17-4 in two games against Ridgefield last year.

Stamford gets a crack at defending FCIAC champion Darien on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Terry Conners Rink.
