Staples High wrestler Jeremy Sherman lost in the third round of the 126-pound class at the State Open on Saturday in New Haven.

After close wins in his first two matches, Sherman dropped a 3-2 decision to Trumbull's Brandon Lisci in his third bout.

The Staples senior went 1-1 in the loser's bracket. He defeated New Canaan's Kevin Hall by major decision 11-1 and lost to New Milford's Niko Stefanatos 5-3 by decision.

Bacon Academy's Matt McAllister won the 126-pound class.

Staples placed 70th out of 87 teams with six points. Danbury won the team title with 130 points, its 11th championship in the last 14 years.
