Scholastic roundup: Newtown baseball team to host Pomperaug in Sandy Hook benefit game
Published 11:09 pm, Tuesday, April 2, 2013
The area baseball rivalry between Newtown and Pomperaug has produced its share of classics in recent years, dating back to the Panthers' 13-12 victory in a wild quarterfinal clash in the 2010 Class LL state tournament.
Those memorable matchups were on Pomperaug coach Mike Eisenbach's mind when he phoned Newtown coach Matt Memoli this past offseason with an idea for making this year's annual regular-season meeting more meaningul than ever. Eisenbach, a Newtown native who attended Sandy Hook Elementary School, proposed "A Game to Remember," a tribute game to honor the victims and first responders of the Dec. 14 tragedy. The winners of the last three SWC championships (Pomperaug in 2010-11, Newtown in 2012) will meet at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport on April 25 at 6 p.m. Admission will be free (parking excluded). Instead, donations will be accepted on behalf of the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department.
"A lot of people have asked `What can I do?' (in the aftermath of the tragedy)," Memoli said. "We want to honor these people and make this a fun family event, from little kids all the way up to adults."
Memoli said the two schools had worked out an agreement with the Bridgeport Bluefish in which the cost of the field would be covered if more than 1,000 fans attend. For additional information, Memoli can be emailed at firstname.lastname@example.org or at email@example.com.
