Ridgefield's Gravitte places sixth at nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A number of area athletes fashioned memorable performances on Sunday, the third and final day of the New Balance Boys & Girls Outdoor Track National Championships at North Carolina A&T University.

Staples High School senior Henry Wynne closed out his prep career in perfect fashion as he won the boys one-mile run in 4:07.84. Wynne will attend the University of Virginia in the fall.

On the girls side, Ridgefield High School's Ellie Gravitte took sixth place in the javelin with a heave of 138-feet-6-inches.

New Canaan High School's James Randon finished fourth in the mile in 4:10.29. Randon also placed second in the two-mile run in 8:52.56, just seven seconds behind the winner.

St. Joseph High School's Steve D'Ascenio took fourth place in the 10-event, two-day boys decathlon. D'Ascenio's 6,237 points were just 12 out of third place.

Other impressive boys performances Sunday included the 4 x 1 mile relay (Ridgefield High, 14th, 18:01.48), Distance Medley Relay (Ridgefield, 11th, 10:29.47) and Staples High's James Milliken (800 meter emerging elite division, 11th, 1:55.43; one-mile run emerging elite, 24th, 4:25.14).

In the Distance Medley Relay, Staples captured third place in 11:53.61. In the girls mile run, Cate Allen of Fairfield Warde finished in 18th place in 5:02.51.

Other impressive girls performances included Wilbur Cross freshman Danae Rivers (800 meters, 10th, 2:09.99), 4 x 1 mile relay (Ridgefield High, 17th, 21:30.02) and 4 x 800 relay (Ridgefield, 15th, 9:22.85).
