Joe Lato, Weston
Seventh-year coach guided Weston to a 9-3 record, an SWC Patriot Division title and one of the best seasons in school history. The Trojans won nine games and reached the state playoffs for the first time in 23 years and only the second time in school history. ... Weston earned the school's first playoff victory with a 29-22 victory over Ellington/Somers. The Trojans advanced to the Class M semifinals where they lost to Berlin 21-7. ... Weston won five games by seven points or less in the regular season, only losses were to New Fairfield (42-21) and Masuk (49-0). ... Lato was named the New York Giants Lou Rettino High School Coach of the Week for Oct. 15. ... Three Weston players made all-state, Tyler Hassett, Justin Schaffer and Austin Gomar. ... A graduate of Newtown, where he set the school single-season rushing record and won two state championships under Bob Zito, Lato attended Nichols College and is a physical education teacher at Weston. He spent 10 years as an assistant at Newtown and Masuk before taking over at Weston in 2006.
