Girls golf rivals Greenwich, Staples battle to tie

WESTPORT -- The Staples and Greenwich girls golf teams have traded victories the last several seasons during the regular season, and although Greenwich has claimed the last three FCIAC titles, Staples has finished runner-up each time and is always a threat to take the top spot.
This time the teams had to share the spoils as the Wreckers and Cardinals posted identical 182 scorecards in their match at Longshore on Tuesday afternoon. The match was the season-opener for Staples, while Greenwich had won its lone meet April 8.
"The course was in great shape," Greenwich coach Marie Shimchick said. "Different players came through in different ways and they all pulled together. It was a nice way to start the season, it's such a rivalry with Staples it was nice to see it end in a tie."
Greenwich junior Catherine McEvoy easily won medalist honors with a two-under-par 35. McEvoy helped the Cardinals win their first State Open last year and has continued to develop, according to Shimchick.
"(McEvoy is) phenomenal, she brings out other things in her teammates and her teammates bring out other things in her," Shimchick said. "It's very much collaborative and sets a high mark that the girls are trying to achieve."
McEvoy had four birdies during her stellar round. Sophomore Ashley Feighery was next for Greenwich with a 46, Kendyl Nethercott fired a 49 and Mana Fujiwara had a 52.
"Obviously we have some putting issues to work on," Shimchick said. "But it's a really great progression because it wasn't too long ago that we were looking to break 200."
Anelise Browne and Alex McMahon each shot a 41 for the Wreckers, who competed for the first time under first-year coach Patty Kondub.
"I started off kind of rough, but I ended pretty well and was happy with it," said Browne, who bogeyed the first two holes before paring the next two.
"I wasn't really playing well last week, so I was kind of nervous going into this (match)," McMahon added.
Senior Mary Bennewitz fired a 47 and Olivia Wood had a 53 for the Wreckers.
The teams will meet again May 12 at Griffith E Harris, the home of the Cardinals. Staples pulled out a 180-182 win there a year ago.
"I'm really excited about the season," Browne said. "We have a pretty new team, I hope we do well."
