GFA roundup: Girls lacrosse moves to 8-4

The GFA girls lacrosse team improved to 8-4 by defeating Hamden Hall 16-4 May 10. Nine players scored in the victory for GFA. Sophomore Ingrid Backe and freshman Kate Paliotta (Westport) each had three goals. Senior Tia Carson (Westport) and sophomore Ellie Wong each had two goals. Goalie Lucy Webb made 10 saves in the cage.

Boys Lacrosse

The Dragons (9-4) defeated Brunswick 10-5 May 7 and King 9-5 May 10.

Against Brunswick, the Dragons found themselves down 5-2 at the half, but went on an 8-0 run and won the game 10-5.

GFA never trailed in its win over king. Senior Max Tarika had three goals and an assist. Senior Conor Eckert and sophomore Jack Mackle each scored a pair of goals.

Boys Tennis

GFA (7-1) won a pivotal match on the road at Hopkins 4-3 May 7. The Dragons are now in a tie for first place in the FAA with two league matches remaining. Sophomore Cole Rummelsburg, at No. 3 singles, won his match 6-3, 6-1, taking control from start. GFA quickly picked up another win at No. 2 singles with senior captain Kyle Wolfe winning 6-3, 6-3. Hopkins equaled the score at two matches apiece with wins at No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles. With the score tied at two and the intensity mounting, junior Scott Brown and freshman Will Wappler at No. 2 doubles won a close match 6-1, 6-7, 7-5. Everything was on the line for junior Gabe Tishman at No. 1 singles, who earned a three set victory (5-7, 6-1, 6-4) to secure the victory for GFA.

Girls Tennis

The Dragons (3-5) defeated Holy Child 4-3 May 5 and fell 5-2 to Sacred Heart May 6.

Against Holy Child, Emily Cahill (No. 3 singles), Avery Wolf and Georgie Garner (No. 1 doubles), Maggie Sherin and Blair Marine (No. 2 doubles) earned victories.

Against Sacred Heart, No. 1 singles player Devon Wolfe earned a win.

Sailing

The Dragons raced against Fairfield Ludlowe and Fairfield Warde May 9 in addition to competing in the Fairfield Cup. GFA took two losses to Fairfield Ludlowe, but defeated Fairfield Warde 2-0. Senior Andrew McCarthy, senior Allie Nixon, sophomore Eliza Nixon, senior Charolotte Frank, junior Hayes Marcus, senior Olivia Taylor and junior Lily McGonagle led the charge.

Golf

GFA (4-6) finished sixth in the FAA tournament at New Canaan Country Club May 5. Freshmen Curtis Tauck (Westport) and Dustin Cook (Westport) led GFA with a pair of 87s on the par 71 course. Sophomore Alex McKenna, senior captains Mark Whittaker and Jack Wood, along with junior Kevin Wong rounded out the scoring for GFA.

GFA ended its season with a loss against King May 8. Cook led GFA with a 43. Whittaker and Wood finished their high school careers with two close matches, and freshman Jack Moley began his high school career with a close match.

Softball

GFA (1-9) lost 15-4 to Hopkins May 6 and 15-14 to Sacred Heart May 8.

Against the Tigers, the Dragons fell on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Caroline Kruk went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI, and eighth grader Susannah Johnson hit a stand up triple. Shira Friedson knocked in a pair of runs.
