GFA roundup: Girls lacrosse goes 2-1

The Dragons (2-1) opened up their season with a 16-5 victory over St. Luke's April 1. Nine players scored in the win, including three goals from Tia Carson (Westport), Maggie Kelly and Kate Paliotta (Westport).
GFA dropped its next game, a 14-6 decision to New England power Greenwich Academy April 3. The Gators built up a 9-1 lead by halftime and cruised to victory.
The Dragons responded with a 14-2 win over Westover April 5. This time, 10 players found the back of the cage. Junior Charlotte Kreitler led the team with three goals. Junior Campbell Goldsmith and eighth grader Bella Litt each added two goals.
GFA (1-1) team dropped a close 7-6 game to Willbraham and Monson April 2 despite a late rally. Excelling between the pipes was junior Riley Grady, who made 14 saves on the day. At the X, face off man Sean Kozdeba won 11 of 17 draws. Scoring for the Dragons were senior Max Tarika, senior Brendan Bieder, senior Conor Eckert and junior Martin Brennan with one goal each, and sophomore Jack Mackle with two goals.

The Dragons opened their season with a tri-match at Yale April 2, when Hopkins played host to both GFA and King. GFA lost 9-0 to King and 8-1 to Hopkins. Senior captain Mark Whittaker led GFA with a 43, followed by sophomore Alex McKenna, who captured GFA's lone point of the day by defeating his rival from Hopkins.
GFA squared off with Greenwich Academy and Greenwich High School last week April 2. The racing was extremely tight, and although GFA took two losses to both teams, the team did not go down without a fight. Sophomores Marguerite Courtemanche, Caroline Booth (Westport), and Eliza Nixon led the way with help from sophomore Josh Gleason, senior Allie Nixon, and senior Charlotte Frank.
The Dragons posted a 17-5 victory against Christian Heritage April 2. Eighth grader Susannah Johnson went 2-for-4, including a grand slam. She had six RBI at the plate and struck out four on the mound. Senior Caroline Kruk went 3-for-3 with four RBI. Senior Julia Yingling went 2-for-4 with four RBI.
The GFA Baseball team lost to Hamden Hall 9-2 and Hopkins 14-0 last week. Against Hamden Hall, both senior Drew Martin and junior Jake Berman (Westport) hit doubles.
