The Bridgeport Sound Tigers scored six goals on 15 shots Saturday. And they lost horribly. A mismash of disasters in front of goalie Kenny Reiter allowed the host Albany Devils to trounce the Sound Tigers 8-6 at Times Union Center.
The Sound Tigers reached their season's one-quarter mark with a 5-10-1-3 record, the worst start in the team's 13 years. They'd snapped a six-game winless streak Friday with a win against Hartford.
Bridgeport was credited with just three shots in the second period Saturday (all three went in) and three more in the third (scoring on one). It had never played a game with more than 12 combined goals. That changed when Chris McKelvie scored with 7:34 to go, making it 8-5 Albany and ending Reiter's night early after 24 saves on 32 shots.
Nick Larson scored his second goal off the draw, but Bridgeport drew no closer.
The Sound Tigers led 1-0 and 2-1 but allowed the next three goals. Alan Quine's first as a pro cut it to 4-3; the Devils tacked on two more before Chris Bruton's deflection and Matt Donovan's left-point shot tied it yet again.
But Stefan Matteau scored the first of his two goals on a power play with 18.6 seconds left in the second period to break the tie. Donovan cleared the zone, but Albany regrouped quickly, and Matteau pounced on the hard carom after Harri Pesonen's shot went wide off the end boards.
