The Fairfield County Sports Commission named Staples distance runner Hannah DeBalsi as Westport's Sports Person of the Year on Wednesday. A committee led by a local town representative from the county commission selects the winner in each of 15 communities.

DeBalsi won the 2-mile race on June 15 at the New Balance Nationals Outdoors track and field championships in Greensboro, N.C., earning All-America recognition. DeBalsi finished second at the Brooks PR Invitational two weeks later.

DeBalsi followed up her outstanding freshman season with a special sophomore one. She placed second at cross country nationals last December before coming home fourth in the 2-mile at indoor nationals in March.

DeBalsi and the other local winners will be honored at the commission's 10th anniversary Sports Night awards dinner on Oct. 20 in Greenwich.
