Brown’s blast leads Darien past Staples

“He’s been Mr. Clutch all year,” Scott said. “He wants to be in those big spots and he’s the guy we want up in those situations.”
It was be Brown’s two-out, two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning that was the difference in a 4-3 victory over Staples — sending the defending champion Blue Wave on to the semifinals of the FCIAC tournament.
“Ben (Casparius) is probably the best pitcher in the state,” Brown said. “He left a fastball up and I was lucky enough to capitalize.”
Casparius pitched well over his five innings of work for the Wreckers, despite the one mistake, striking out four and allowing four runs on six hits. At the plate Casparius was 3-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run.
But it was the home run to Brown that doomed Staples.
“I left a ball up on a really good hitter that I know I shouldn’t have,” Casparius said. “He put a pretty good swing on it and its baseball so it happens.”
Darien starter Henry Williams settled down after surrendering the first inning home run to Casparius, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out four over five innings.
Although the Wreckers were able to get runners on, the timely, clutch hit eluded them throughout.
“We just needed a big two-out hit,” Staples coach Jack McFarland said. “We had all our opportunities.”
The biggest of those opportunities came in the sixth.
After loading the bases, Darien reliever Peter Marren got the Wreckers’ Chad Knight to fly out to right — ending both the inning and the best chance for a Staples comeback.
“Proud of my guys,” Scott said. “They put a lot of pressure on us. We bent, but we didn’t break.”
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Casey Brown, Darien. The senior first basemen hit the go-ahead two-run home run to give the Blue Wave the lead.
Casey Brown’s two out, 2-run home run off Staples’ starter Ben Casparius in the fifth inning to give the Blue Wave the lead 4-2.
“If we can beat Ben, we can beat anybody. That’s our philosophy.” — Casey Brown.
