Forgot the RV and take up "camping" 21st century-style.
Camping out, and inside, has never been so much fun, or luxurious than at the upscale Adirondack camp-style log cabin at 367 Newtown Turnpike in Weston. So rustic and attractive and upscale is this cabin that it was used as a setting for Ralph Lauren ads. The house was also in the original "Stepford Wives" movie.
"Willowood," as it is called, was built in 1920 and has been meticulously restored and updated to combine the beauty of country living with the sophistication needs for today's lifestyle; and yet, it retains the magic of an Adirondack "great camp."
There are several out buildings on the 3.1-acre estate, among them a two-room cabin that was used in the early 20th-century as a retreat by one of the owners, illustrator William Gillies, who was well known in this artist community for his covers of the Saturday Evening Post.
Gillies left Weston and "Willowood" to work in California on the Disney film productions of "Fantasia" and "Pinocchio." This cabin is heated, insulated and wired for phone, internet and cable.
At the top of the property, the current owners cleared out a space on the hillside to create a campsite featuring a tent platform, stone barbecue, fire pit and natural benches. The site is not immediately visible. One must walk through a wooded area of the property to access it. The current residents include Scouts in the family, and they have allowed local Scouts to camp there.
Another separate building can serve as an office or art studio, and there is a two-car renovated garage with a finished room on the second floor that can be accessed by a stone staircase. This space would be ideal for guest accommodations. These out buildings add more than 1,000 square feet to the total amount of living space on the property.
The main house, which comprises 3,340 square feet, sits along a good sized pond, which is fed by a stream that is ever-flowing through the property. There are two small islands in the pond and a bridge to cross as one turns into the driveway. A wall of stones that borders the pond unifies it with the house that has a façade of stone as well as logs.
The house looks like it would be seen in a high-end, wooded neighborhood off the beaten track in Colorado or Montana, but it is conveniently located only minutes from the heart of Weston and about 15 minutes to downtown Westport.
Inside, many of the rooms have wood paneled walls and exposed beam ceilings, including the great room and kitchen. Features in the kitchen include an oak floor, granite counters, custom copper farm sink, French doors and casement windows.
There are many new features in the house including a two-zone heating and cooling system, storm windows and screens, and a laundry with Bosch washer and dryer. The new master bath has a secondary washer/dryer combo. Also new to that bath are copper sinks, a Jacuzzi tub and stone tiles.
The new guest bath has limestone counters and a wide-plank floor, while a Jack-and-Jill bath features a radiant heated limestone floor.
