The description "private oasis" often is used to promote real estate, and it's true that many Westport properties could qualify as such an enclave.

Those words are particularly suited for the one-acre property with a 6,800-square-foot Colonial house at 12 Broadview Road in the Old Hill section of town. Built in 1997, the house offers proximity to life's necessities -- train station, major highways, shops, restaurants, schools, library and entertainment venues. It also offers the feeling of being on vacation all the time, but particularly in summer months, when the heated, in-ground Gunite swimming pool and spa are open.

The topography of the property is such that the main house sits on level ground, but then there are a number of stone terraces, paths and perennial gardens along an incline that leads to a lower level where the pool and pool house are sited. This creates such a separation between the main house and pool area that the current family says they really do feel like they are away from home when they are lounging poolside.

In fact, the pool house is so well appointed and self-contained that there is no need to access the main house. It has a great room with a vaulted ceiling, changing areas and a snack bar.

Although this house sits on level ground it is perched high atop a hill with breathtaking fall and winter views of the Saugatuck River Valley, hence the name of the street: Broadview. The street itself is desirable, not just because of its location but also because it is a semi-circular roadway that feeds into Old Hill Road. Therefore, it is not well traveled except by its own residents.

The gray clapboard house features a long, welcoming covered front porch with six gray columns. Its fieldstone chimney and unusual, almost Arts and Crafts-like shutters add to its visual exterior charm.

Inside, the architectural and design features continue with the decorative inlaid wood design in the foyer floor and the graceful arches and curves of walls, doorways and staircase.

The living room has a vaulted ceiling with exposed, antique, hand-hewn beams, skylights and a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace.

Off the living room is an in-law suite with its own bath, window seat, two walls of built-in bookshelves and lower cabinets, and sliding doors to a deck/balcony. This suite could also be used as an office, although there is a sizable room in the lower level that serves that purpose.

Between the formal dining room and gourmet kitchen is a butler's pantry and separate walk-in pantry.

The kitchen features a large center island, granite counters and a good size breakfast nook that, like the dining room, has stunning views of the Saugatuck River Valley. Appliances include a Viking Professional six-burner range, Sub-Zero refrigerator and Miele dishwasher.

Step down into the family room, which has a stone fireplace with a white wood mantle, and door to another deck/balcony.

On the second floor, the large landing creates a sitting, homework or computer area with built-in bookshelves, lower cabinets, and window seat. There are four bedrooms on this level. The guest bedroom is en suite. The master suite features deep tray ceiling and a marble bath.

In addition to the office on the finished lower level there is a large play or recreation room, two more bedrooms, and several doors to a stone patio.
