The postmodern-style house at 17 Burr Farms Road in the Fairfield County Hunt Club area offers a hint at its unusual design and materials from the moment one approaches the house, which is set well back from the street.

Starting from the long, paved Belgian block-lined driveway is an unpolished white marble walkway that continues past the front entrance and around the far side of the house, where it widens into a large covered patio with marble columns. The same marble serves as a border around the in-ground Gunite swimming pool.

Unpolished white marble serves as a dominant element inside as well. There is an entire wall of quarried white marble on one wall of the formal dining room and around a two-sided corner fireplace. The dining and living rooms have polished white marble floors.

Built in 1951, the house was extensively renovated by its current owners more than a decade ago using as inspiration the work of famed architect Robert A.M. Stern, the dean of the Yale University School of Architecture. "Inside and out, every part of this house was redone," one of the owners said. "This is a rare opportunity to enjoy a postmodern footprint, which speaks to the fact that everything is on one level and is very open with a great flow. It brings the outside in."

The house has 3,870 square feet of living space that appears much larger because of the numerous floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights that open the house to the natural surroundings, providing stunning views of the sanctuary-like property of 1.42 acres. The largely level property has been professionally landscaped and includes mature trees and shrubs, perennial flower gardens and more than 2,000 flowering bulbs.

The owners say this is also a perfect home for entertaining. They have accommodated as many as 120 people for family functions and fundraising events. There is a wet bar in the living room.

The house is convenient to the Post Road (Route 1), yet it affords privacy between its landscaping and the fact that Burr Farms Road is a quiet cul-de-sac.

Inside, stand-out stonework continues throughout the house. The family room has a wood-burning, quarried limestone fireplace and terra cotta tile flooring. The kitchen counters and the sizable center island are topped with a Brazilian granite called La Dolce Vita, which means "the sweet life." The master bath and at least one other bath feature polished or tumbled marble. Three of the four baths in the house are newly renovated.

The living and dining rooms feature coffered ceilings. The solarium, which sits at the back of the house, accessed through the dining and family rooms, has cherrywood flooring.

The recently renovated kitchen has maple cabinets, breakfast bar, tumbled marble backsplash and high-end appliances including a Sub-Zero refrigerator.

In the master bedroom suite there is a white marble fireplace, a dressing area and a private garden with a meditative, decorative water fountain. The master bath features a tumbled marble floor, jetted tub, walk-in shower, double vanity and make-up table.

Off the family room there is a two-room au pair suite, which could be used as an office or for another purpose. This area of the house also has a laundry room, cedar closet and access to the over-sized two-car garage. Because the house does not have an attic or basement, the owners enlarged the garage and added numerous built-in closets for storage.

An open house is planned at the property June 2, from 1 to 4 p.m.
