It's not just the houses on Stonewall Lane that are new. So is the road.

The private road off Hermit Lane in the Redcoat section of town was created about a year and a half ago with approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission as part of a four-house subdivision. A 5-acre, overgrown and wooded Hermit Lane property was cleared to make way for the road and to accommodate the houses by Snellman Construction, a fourth-generation Westport builder.

The 7,000-square-foot Colonial house at 1 Stonewall Lane is completed. Two others are in progress and groundbreaking for the fourth will take place soon. The addresses of the other houses are 2, 3 and 4 Stonewall Lane. All four houses will complement each other, yet no two will be alike, according to the contractor.

All four are on the market, and there are advantages to purchasing before construction is complete. Buyers could then customize the home, tailoring it to the needs of their family and lifestyle.

Laurence Bradley, the town's planning and zoning director, said it is rare for a new road, private or public, to be created these days. "I haven't seen a new public road in a long time," he said.

Generally, new roads are private and tied to subdivisions, and Stonewall Lane may be among the last. "So much of Westport is developed, so there's very little left to subdivide," Bradley said.

"There are 332 roads in Westport designated as town roads, with a total combined length of approximately 123 miles. There are 460 private roads, totaling approximately 66 miles," according to the Department of Public Works website.

Unlike some roads named for the very thing that is destroyed to make way for development, the stone walls in this neighborhood remain. While the walls have been a part of the landscape for decades, new stone elements are incorporated into the construction. At 1 Stonewall Lane, the Belgium block-lined driveway transitions to a paving stone path to the front and "side" entrances. The formal entrance has a covered front porch with four columns and features wider-than-usual sidelights and a long, narrow transom.

Inside, there are Shaker panels on the lower portion of some walls and simple crown molding. "Simpler and cleaner. That's what we were trying to achieve," the real estate agent said.
