If it's true that a house embodies the characteristics of a longtime owner, then the Mediterranean-style, Tuscan-inspired house at 31 Kings Highway North is an enduring love song poised to share a wellspring of romantic melodies with its next owner.

Throughout the mansion, there is an aura of the many love songs composed in the music room and elsewhere in this home, the residence of singer/songwriter and humanitarian Michael Bolton since 1991.

Bolton was one of Sony Music's top recording artists when he purchased the house in the Old Hill section of town. He has written and performed iconic ballads like "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," "Time, Love and Tenderness," "How Can We Be Lovers?" and "Said I Loved You But I Lied." His career highlights include eight Top-10 albums, two No. 1 singles on the Billboard charts, selling more than 50 million albums and singles, and winning multiple American Music and Grammy awards.

In his years at the mansion, Bolton raised a family and found inspiration in the natural surroundings along Nash's Pond. But his career shows no signs of ebbing. It continues to thrive, so Bolton finds himself more frequently working on the West Coast and touring. He will always have ties to Connecticut -- he was born and raised in New Haven and has claimed Westport as his hometown for decades -- but it's time to move on and let someone else enjoy the taste of Italy on the banks of a pond.

Bolton hosted many music and entertainment personalities at the house, including fellow Westport resident Nile Rodgers, Renee Fleming, Shania Twain, Chuck Norris, Ronnie Spector and Andre Agassi.

Oprah Winfrey filmed one of her shows from the property's studio.

Many a late-night tennis game was played for some relief from long recording sessions. Bolton said he also discovered a love of golf here thanks to a computer golf game marathon in the mid-1990s with Grammy-winning engineer Dave "Big Daddy" Reitzas.

There is a resort-like atmosphere inside and out, augmented by a private tennis court and heated Gunite in-ground swimming pool. There also is a large guest house on the picture postcard-like grounds. Built in 1988, the main house features 9,633 square feet of living space with a large, multi-level marble terrace and patio that extend the living to the outdoors in an attractive and private, gated setting surprisingly close to downtown and with proximity to the Saugatuck Railroad Station.

There are elegant rooms and exquisite details throughout the stucco house starting right from the decorative, hand-carved French doors of the colonnaded front entrance. The doors, framed with sidelights and a transom of patterned beveled and leaded glass, open to the grand two-story foyer with marble flooring and a curved staircase that climbs to the private master bedroom suite befitting a pop star.
