On the market: Cottage on Compo Mill Cove is special, inside and out
Updated 7:40 am, Sunday, December 13, 2015
A recently published book by Westport artist Judy Katz highlights the history and beauty of Compo Mill Cove, largely in the watercolors she painted over the years.
The same view that inspired Katz is there to enjoy every day for those who live along “The Beautiful POND,” the name of Katz’s book, including those in the white modern beach cottage at 209 Hillspoint Road in the Compo Beach neighborhood of Westport. The house is on the market and its next owner can have those attractive water views from the house’s three floors of living space.
This is a dynamic neighborhood. The house is on a parcel of 0.08-acre right before the turn into Old Mill Beach and diagonally across the street from Elvira’s Market and Deli. The area is especially bustling during summer months and even though the house sits among all the activity it is remarkably private. The front courtyard and its Zen garden are hidden behind privacy fencing.
Unlike many houses this close to the water, this house has three off-street parking spaces in front of it. At least another two spaces could be created by moving the fence closer to the house. It would decrease the size of the courtyard, but it would still be considerable.
The house was built in 1900, but has been remodeled to accommodate today’s lifestyle. It has 1,918 square feet of living space. The large living room has two sets of French doors to the bluestone patio on the water view side of the house. The ceiling is quite unusual with a number of exposed milled beams. There is also a decorative column in the center of the room.
Former owners left their mark on the living room in the form of a cement block inlaid in the floor that bears the husband and wife’s handprints, name and the date 3-92.

The kitchen is open to the living room and features granite counters, double stainless-steel sinks and a sliding door to the courtyard. Appliances include a Thermador five-burner range top, Gaggenau oven, Bosch dishwasher and a Sub-Zero refrigerator hidden behind natural wood paneling. There are also stacked wine and beverage refrigerators.
On the second and third levels there is wide-planked wood floors. The second floor has three bedrooms. The master is en suite and has a door to a Juliet-style balcony. The master and a second bedroom both enjoy water views. The third bedroom at the front of the house has a vaulted ceiling and built-in bookshelves and desk.
The third floor has one good-sized room and probably the best water view of all. This room could be a bedroom if needed, but would also make an ideal art studio because of the amount of sunlight that floods into it. French doors open to a Juliet balcony.
