WESTPORT— At the end of a private cul-de-sac in the Compo Beach area an English cottage colonial house sits on a 0.65-acre level and sloping property. Its location, at the top of Compo Parkway at No. 39, cloaks it in privacy, and yet the house is also within convenient proximity to recreational and transportation amenities.

Longshore Club Park is across the street from Compo Parkway on Compo Road South. Compo Beach and the Saugatuck train station are also within an easy walk.

This house has its own Har Tru tennis court. There is no in-ground swimming pool but that matters little when there is a pool at Longshore and a public beach just blocks away. Longshore also offers a golf course, paddleboard courts, marina and other recreational and entertainment features.

All of the attractions caught the attention of sports writer and television announcer Jim McKay, who lived in this house for years. In earlier decades, the house was a summer home for a New York doctor and his family. The house was built in 1920 with all of the interesting architectural features of that era. Its charm and personality remain even though it was updated for today's lifestyle. It has 2,608 square feet of living space, including three bedrooms, a finished lower level with a playroom, laundry room, half bath and another room that could be an office or computer room.

A slate path leads to the front entrance of the slate gray-blue house, which is sited close to the street, maximizing the use of the side and backyards. Shrubbery serves as a buffer from the street, but there is little traffic on this portion of the Compo Parkway, which is clearly misnamed.

Few houses sit at the top of the cul-de-sac and only local residents use this road.

The house has white trim and the tall, thin, two-story Palladium window on the front façade hints at other graceful curves inside where there are arched entryways, one into an interior foyer/hallway, and another into the formal dining room.

The small foyer, which has the first of two half baths in this house, opens to a large, square living room. It has a wide fireplace with a white wood mantel. The open floor plan in this room includes access to the sunroom, a casual counterpoint to the more formal, yet relaxed living room. Step down into the sunroom, which features a vaulted pinewood ceiling, built-in shelving, and atrium doors to the upper tier of the multi-level wood deck.

The dining room is accented by recessed lighting and French doors that separate it from the kitchen. Features in the kitchen include an atrium door to the upper deck in the eat-in or breakfast area, pinewood ceiling, pantry, and a four-burner gas Thermador range with grill and double ovens. A side door leads to a lower portion of the deck. A long peninsula provides additional counter space and houses the double porcelain sinks. A cafe door separates the kitchen from the interior foyer/hall.
