A timeless treasure exists in the classic antique Colonial house at 238 Greens Farms Road, Westport's oldest neighborhood of the same name.

Dating from 1912, this vintage house has undergone subsequent remodeling that carefully preserved its original integrity, historic charm and elegant details. One of those details is found in the entrance foyer, which rather than a typical coat closet of most houses, has a large cloak room. Consider that a hint as to the entertainment value of this house, which also provides amenities for everyday living.

The 5,133-square-foot house has generously proportioned rooms and lots of them --12 in all, half of which are bedrooms. There is also a fieldstone-and-wood carriage house, the lower level of which makes up the two-car garage and the second floor contains the two-bedroom apartment. It is a legal rental.

The house is only about a half mile from the Greens Farms train station, making it ideal for commuters, and Burying Hill Beach is just beyond the train station.

The 2.15-acre property is largely level with some gently slopes. It is a corner lot that borders Sherwood Island Lane on one side. Along the front of the property on Greens Farms Road there is a privacy screen of tall shrubbery. A break in the middle of the shrubs reveals a stone path, which is punctuated by stone pillars topped with lanterns and a white picket gate.

The crushed pebble driveway creates a semi-circle in front of the house with two entrances/exits on Greens Farms. Another portion of the driveway leads to the carriage house and has an entrance/exit on Sherwood Island Lane.

On the exterior of the house is a combination of clapboard and stucco. Inside, the level of detail becomes immediately available in the entrance hallway, which features Wainscoting on the lower walls, a window seat, two elliptical windows, and black and white diamond-patterned floor.

Rounded entryways from the foyer into some first floor rooms are topped with keystones. The formal living room has a wide fireplace, bay window and French doors to the large sun room, which looks much like a garden room out of magazines like Victoria or Home & Garden, complete with latticed moldings. Built-in bookshelves flank and top the door from the living room to the formal dining room. In the dining room a corner fireplace has a surround of hand-painted ceramic tiles, and shell-motif china cabinet.

A pine paneled family room or library has built-in bookshelves, a deep bay window and red brick fireplace with a hand-hewn beam mantle. The library flows into the sizable butler's pantry, which features numerous glass-front cabinets, drawers, sink, and the same ceramic tile floor as the kitchen. The pantry also has a Bosch dishwasher.

Kitchen appliances include a GE Profile cook top, Kenmore Pro oven, Sub-Zero refrigerator, LG microwave, and a second Bosch dishwasher. The kitchen also has a built-in desk area, eat-in area, and two separate doors, one to a rear, patterned red brick patio and the other to the side yard and the carriage house.

At the top of the main staircase on the second floor there is a bedroom with French doors. Several bedrooms are en suite. The sizable master bedroom has its own sitting room, which features a wall of windows. Both rooms have dentil crown molding.

The carriage house has its own covered porch with two stone columns and flower garden. Inside, a generous landing could serve as a small office or computer area. In addition to the two bedrooms, this apartment has a living room, kitchen, pantry area with glass-front cabinet and drawers, and several closets.

The full, unfinished basement has a room that could easily be transformed into a wine cellar.
