In the late 1930s, New York businessman John Warnock owned a 26-acre estate in the Coleytown section of town.
In 1947, Warnock's daughter, Evelyn Warnock Zinke, built a Colonial house on her portion of the estate, named Pippin Hill. The name is still visible on the lantern-topped stone pillars at the entrance to this property at 185 North Ave.
The estate is no longer 26 acres. The portion of it at this address encompasses 2.89 acres and creates a private personal resort with the 12-room house of 5,513 square feet, a hard-surface tennis court with lighting for night play, a Gunite in-ground swimming pool, pool house and hot tub, and attractive flower gardens. The grounds include perennial plants and specimen trees.
Although the house is in the northern part of Westport, it is only about 10 minutes from downtown and not far from the town's two train stations. The Merritt Parkway also is convenient.
The house is shielded by a scrim of trees. It sits at the top of a slight incline and is accessed by a circular driveway. A slate path leads to the front entrance of this stone and white clapboard house with black shutters. The front door is flanked by sidelights and detailed millwork including the illusion of two fluted columns and a keystone.
Every room seems to have special details, from the millwork and molding throughout the house to the original hidden china cabinet and picture frame paneling of the formal dining room. Such detailing is usually reserved for the rooms in which residents and their guests spend the most time, but this house even has a first-floor hallway that is decked out in elegant millwork.
The formal living room has the first of the house's three fireplaces and two sets of French doors to the large sunroom, which has a stone floor and its own French doors to the backyard near the pool area. A large multiple-paned window in the living room provides attractive yard views.
In the family room there is a fieldstone fireplace, ceramic tile floor and vaulted ceiling. A door leads to the wood deck. There is also a long serving area with a utility sink and cabinets, which is ideal for entertaining inside or out.
The library has a fireplace with a hand-painted ceramic tile surround and a rounded, raised hearth, built-in bookshelves, and a large picture window from which to enjoy yard views.
The gourmet kitchen will be a favorite place for the home-owners and their visitors to hang out. It is quite large and filled with natural light. It features a sizable eat-in area, Vermont slate counters and a massive center island with a butcher block top. The floor is hardwood, as in most of the rest of the house, and there are multiple parallel beams overhead.
Appliances include a six-burner Viking Professional range, warming drawer, Sub-Zero refrigerator and an extra Thermador wall oven. The butler's pantry has a copper sink, long, brass-plated counter top and glass front cabinets.
Off the kitchen is a first-floor guest or au pair room with a full bath.
On the second floor there are four bedrooms. The master bedroom suite offers a private wood deck/balcony, a bay window that creates a window seat, and his and hers walk-in closets with organizers. The master bath has marble flooring, two separate marble-topped vanities, walk-in shower, soaking tub and a bidet.
There will be n open house on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 4 p.m.
