At a time when many houses of a particular style or date are torn down to make way for much larger structures, there is at least one classic Colonial on Salem Road that is worth keeping.
For the first time in 27 years the 3,494-square-foot house at 27 Salem Road is on the market. The house and its 1.07-acre level property are not the only attractive selling points -- so is its central location. The house is two miles from the Merritt Parkway and Interstate 95, and less than three miles to the Saugatuck and Greens Farms train stations. Downtown is two miles away and shopping along the Post Road, or Route 1, is only a mile from the property.
As the landscape of the neighborhood changes slowly, with similar houses being razed and multimillion-dollar houses being built in their place, this well-constructed house seems suited to the street. It was built in 1968 and offers a glimpse into the past while providing the amenities of today's lifestyle.
The beige clapboard house has dark-green shutters and is set back from the road. It is accessed from the paved driveway lined in Belgian block. The driveway leads to the two-car attached and insulated garage, which is topped with a cupola and Canada goose weathervane. There is ample parking in the driveway and in the additional parking spaces that can accommodate two vehicles.
A bluestone path winds along the front lawn passed holly bushes, established rhododendrons and other plantings, and ending at the front door. The door is framed by sidelights and opens into a center hall foyer featuring chair railing and wallpaper. Many of the walls in this house have paper covering.
Natural light floods into this house through its numerous sets of side-by-side, six-over-six, double-hung windows.
In the spacious living room there is a fireplace with a surround of Rojo Alicante marble and an ornate white wood mantle, chair railing, and crown molding. Across the foyer is the formal dining room with chair railing, crown molding and wallpaper on the upper walls.
The kitchen may be on the smaller side compared to modern standards, but it is definitely a cook's kitchen with its high-end stainless appliances including an LG refrigerator, Asko dishwasher, Thermador double ovens, and Wolf four-burner range. The walls have a fruit-themed wallpaper on the upper portion of the walls and the fruit motif is continued in the limestone backsplash which features four decorative, raised tiles of cherries, an apple, pear and grapes.
Above the rectangular porcelain sink there is a 12-tile ceramic "mural" of hand-painted flowers and fruit. Other kitchen features include granite counters, a bow window, breakfast bar and a hardwood floor. Off the kitchen there is a family room with a vaulted ceiling, cove lighting and access to the garage and a screened porch.
The porch has a door to the large mahogany deck, which can also be accessed from the laundry room, where there are cabinets and a ceramic tile floor.
On the second floor there are four bedrooms. The master bedroom suite has crown molding and its bath has a marble floor and counters, white ceramic tile backsplash and a large shower with honeycomb tile. Decorative wallpaper covers the walls in this and the hall bath. In both baths the wallpaper also continues onto the ceiling.
The full, finished lower level has a recreation room, large private office and ample storage including a cedar closet. Two over-sized closets have been added to the garage.
Outside, the backyard has a terraced area where one can sit and relax or bird watch. There is room for an in-ground swimming pool.
And for those who are still more interested in the much larger new construction, expansion plans are available for this house.
