The recent closing of Daybreak Nurseries on Main Street is a loss to the gardeners of Westport, but not all is lost to the local gardener who also happens to be house hunting. A Contemporary house at 4 Daybreak Lane right behind the site where the flower and plant business stood nearly 73 years has attractive gardens of its own.
This property of just over half an acre resembles a botanical park with perennial flower beds and a formal English garden, giving it the feel of being miles away from anything and yet it is very close to downtown Westport. It's also a commuter's dream with an entrance to the Merritt Parkway less than half a mile away.
There are two red brick paths, one to the covered front porch with two columns and another lined in Belgian block that leads to the backyard on the side of the house that has the attached two-car garage. The façade comprises taupe-colored cedar, vertical siding.
Inside this renovated and expanded 2,966-square-foot house, built in 1950, there is an open floor plan and walls of glass that provide views of the backyard. In the living room there is a fireplace with terra cotta tile surround and exposed beams. Between the formal living and dining rooms there is a large sitting room from which the kitchen can be accessed. The sitting room was the house's original dining room until the renovation and additions provided the space for the current dining and family rooms.
Kitchen features include a center island with breakfast bar, stone backsplash, Corian counters, tile floor, vaulted ceiling and skylights. It is open to the family room, which houses a brick fireplace, more skylights, ceiling fan and a wall of built-in bookshelves. French doors lead to the large wood deck which has a retractable awning to provide shade over one portion of it.
Yet more skylights serve to illuminate the dining room, which also has angled walls rather than the typical box-shaped room, and exposed beams. Sliding doors lead to the deck.
There are three bedrooms on the first floor; one with two walls of built-in shelving and cabinets so it could be used as an office, library or study, and another that was the original master bedroom with its own full bath and walk-in closet.
The new master suite is all by itself on the second floor providing a wealth of privacy. It has a sitting area, dressing room with built-in dresser drawers, laundry closet, and built-in ironing board. Other features include the vaulted ceiling, exposed beams, huge walk-in closet with organizers, and a window seat with storage cabinets that runs the length of the wall along the back of the house. That same wall features louvered windows topped with transoms. The master bath has a terra cotta tile floor, large jetted spa tub.
The finished, walk-out lower level has paneled walls painted white, wall-to-wall carpeting and a door to a stone patio. There is a sitting room, a small office area, and another room that is currently used as an art studio.
Gardeners take note, Daybreak Nurseries may be gone, but within a few steps of the front door is Anthony's Nursery and Garden Center.
